A little history
An Adirondack chair can be spotted a block away. Its unique design has remained much the same since the day it was invented, back in the early 1900’s. It seems that Thomas Lee was vacationing at his family’s summer home. He decided to build some outdoor lawn furniture. Lee tried a number of different styles, and his family favored one design that had straight lines, flat planes, a sloping seat and wide armrests. He named his chair after the town of Wesport N.Y., where his family always spent their summers.

A local carpenter, Harry Bunnell, saw his design and decided to make the furniture during the winter months, when his carpentry business slowed down. He had a hunch that other summer residents would take to the unique design of these chairs. In fact, without telling Lee, Bunnell applied for and received a patent on the chair design.

Over the years the public started calling it the Adirondack chair, referring to the region of its origin rather than the town. Bunnell spent 20 years producing and selling these chairs. He used hemlock and always painted them with a green or medium brown paint. He also signed each piece. Today original Bunnell Adirondack chairs are sought by collectors around the world and are worth a small fortune.

Many uses
The Adirondack design lives on and today you can find a huge selection of this style of furniture, loveseats, tables, chaise lounges, children's furniture and more. It has become a mainstay of garden furniture that complements porches, lawns, campgrounds, decks, patios, cabins, bed and breakfast inns, lakefront condos, resorts and private homes.

Construction
These wooden chairs are very popular and come in several wood types. Choosing the type of chair you want will largely be based on preference. You can select an Adirondack chair made of cypress, cedar, pine, mahongeny, shorea and light oak, to name a few popular wood types.

Today the plastic chairs, which look just like wood, have gained in popularity. Dense and durable, the recycled plastic polymer used to craft Adirondack chairs will not rot, rust, splinter, crack, or warp. They will stand up against moisture and bugs so they won’t promote mold growth or become weak and brittle over time. The recycled plastic is formulated with UV resistant colors. Popular colors are hunter green, sandy beige, dark teak, and white.
